Product Summary:
----------------
InTheNavy is a game similar to Battleship that plays in ANSI as well as via the WEB!
It has many features, twists, and interesting things to do! In the Navy requires skill, a sense
of adventure, and a desire to have fun! You start off as a Lt. Commander and work your way up
the ranks to Fleet Admiral! You can go out to Sea to do battle or go on Shore Leave to float
your cares away! It is an equal opportunity Navy where anyone can come out on top! You start
the game with a full battle fleet consisting of one Aircraft Carrier, Two Battleships,
Two Destroyers, Two Cruisers, and Two Submarines. All are equipped with the latest combat
weaponary and the latest technology. In fact, in deploying your fleet you can utilize the latest
in False Radar Image Enhanced Defense aka FRIED which allows you to have your ships deployed
in ANY pattern as long as ALL of the blocks in any one ship are touching (by row, by column,
diagonally, all bunched together, or or in a zig zag pattern). As use progress in rank, battles
get harder, new technologies are deployed, and the stakes get HIGHER!

Your fleet can be deployed AUTOMATICALLY (computer enhanced), or can be deployed manually
(where you position every ship). You can play against the computer, or you can have YOUR Computer
play against the Computer! There is even ways to play head to head in challenge matches! And the
best feature of all is that you can play via dialup, telnet, the Navigator, and/or from your
web browser! And as is the case with all my games I try to add a sense of humor, intrigue, romance,
adventure, surprizes, and LOTS of extra things to do!

Setup:
------
1. Unzip the program file into any folder on your system as long as you make sure to PROPERLY
follow all of the remaining steps (especially Steps 2 through 4). I prefer to put my 32 bit games
under the WC5 folder while others prefer to put all games under a GAMES folder. This game works
either way! Please note: you will need TWO game folders; one is for the ANSI part of the game
and the other is for the WEB part of the game (to be discussed later).
Important: Use an unzip program that supports long file names.
and Use a directory name that does not contain any spaces or special characters.

2. Copy the 5 WCX files into your Wildcat/WINServer folder.

3. Add a WcMenu menu option for "InTheNavy". No parameter is needed in wcMenu!

4. VERY IMPORTANT!!! Create a text file called InTheNavy.dat (sample is provided in the zip),
and COPY it to your WINServer DATA folder (usually c:\wc5\data). All entries except line number 3 and 5,
MUST be the fully qualified path name including drive letter (WINServer server names like
wc:\data are NOT allowed). The file must ACCURATELY contain the following 5 lines:

c:\wc5\InTheNavy\ <=======The location of WHERE you installed the game in Step 1
c:\wc5\http\ <=======The path to where your WINServer HTTP folder is
www.yourdomain.com:81/inthenavy <=======The WEB address (URL) for where the web part of the game resides
c:\wc5\http\inthenavy\ <=======The path to where the WEB part of the game is stored
www.yourdomain.com:81/gamemenu.htm <=======The WEB address (URL) for where you want users to go when they click Return to Main Menu

Please note, that you do not have to create the folder in line 4, the game creates it automatically
based on this entry. It should not contain spaces or special characters and must be accessible from the web
(therefore it should be somewhere under your HTTP folder from line 2 of this .DAT file). Also, you
do NOT need to put the :81 as shown on line 3 unless you happen to run WIN Server on the non-standard
port of 81 like I do (because I run IIS on port 80 which is the default port for http).

5. ALL HTML outputs are generated by the program. You should copy all the *.GIF files to the folder
specified in line 4 of your INTHENAVY.DAT (you can use your own but the game looks better with a nice dark
background like the one I provided. You can specify your own background by providing
a NAVY.GIF file (one has been provided in the ZIP file). You can also provide background sounds
by providing a NAVY.WAV or NAVY.MID file (please bear in mind that larger files can slow down
the initial download. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO EDIT OR ALTER THE TEMPLATE OR GENERATED HTM FILES! Note,
if you provide your own backgroud images, or sounds they MUST be the exact names mentioned above and
must be located in the folder referenced in line 4 of your INTHENAVY.DAT file.

6. Make sure to put a link from your game page or whatever page you want to link IN The Navy from on your
web site to (e.g. http://www.pcpursuits.com:81/inthenavy/NavyMenu.htm). The NavyMenu.htm is automatically
generated in the folder referenced in line 4 of your INTHENAVY.DAT. I have included a SHIPS.GIF icon
which makes a great button to use to launch your In The Navy Menu from. Note, the ships.gif will need to
be copied to the location from where you call it on the page where you place the link to the In The Navy Menu.

7. Running the maintenance program, InTheNavyMAINT, from WcEvent (or similar scheduling programs like
BapStats: In The Navy MUST run it's daily maintenance program from a scheduled task in wcEvent since it
interacts with the user and message data base. This logic runs extremely fast and is totally transparent
to the users. I designed InTheNavyMAINT to run in this fashion to ensure that the maintenance routine
runs on a daily basis. It is best to schedule it to run sometime after midnight when activity in the game is expected to be low.
So to use this program simply created a batch file called InTheNavyMAINT.BAT with the following lines:
C:
cd \wc5
wcrun -r "InTheNavyMaint"

Of course the first line should reflect the hard drive where you have installed WIN Server and
the second line should relect the directory name where you installed WIN Server (the default is WC5).
All you need to do after that is add an event to run InTheNavyMAINT.BAT on a daily basis with no
parameters and of courses it is assumed that you copied the InTheNavyMAINT.WCX to the WC5 folder.
This program will delete the temporary htm files, determine the winning lottery number, issue lottery
prizes to each player with winning tickets and will also issue pay checks via direct deposit
to the players on paydays (which is Fridays). The salary issued is based on rank!
If you have ANY problems with setting this up, feel free to contact me at sysop@pcpursuits.com.

8. Run the program once from the ANSI side. You don't have to do anything other than enter the program
and exit (but heck since your there why not play a game). What this does is generates all the required
folders and files under the InTheNavy folder where you unzipped the contents of the zip file. In
particular you should have at least the 3 following subfolders: DATA, DISPLAYS, and USERS. Other
folders like CHALLENGES, HALL OF FAME, MESSAGES and OLD SCORES should be generated as well. Most
important are ALL the .BBS display files which need to be in the folder referenced in line one of your
INTHENAVY.DAT file (created by YOU in step 4) and are automatically copied from there to the subfolder
    DISPLAYS.

General Information About In The Navy and Optional Setup Options:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
When you enter the game for the first time, various folders and files will be generated. They do not take up
a large amount of space and should not be deleted or altered except as identified in other parts of this
documentation. The game is ready to play at this point but there are MANY additional options you can set,
define, and customize! I recommend playing it first in default mode before tweaking any of the
settings, features, and screens. The only exceptions are that you might want to edit the WHOS.DAT,
CHAT.DAT, and SYSOP.DAT as described under "Optional Setup".

Optional Setup:
---------------
The InTheNavy.wcx can be renamed to any name you would prefer as long as you keep the .wcx extension
and make sure to point WcMenu to it, e.g., Navy.wcx BUT since I have a GAMENAME.DAT file which allows
you to change the name that gets displayed in your Who's Online and in your Activity Log, then
renaming this file is probably a moot point.

All files are stored in the TWO game folder where you installed "InTheNavy" and as specified in the
INTHENAVY.DAT file discussed in Step 4 above. Other Files and sub-folders will be generated as well.

The following files can be modified to override certain defaults (please note,
do NOT change the names or locations of the files, only the contents):

1. The first is called SYSOP.DAT. This file (as generated) contains the single
word "SYSOP". This file is used to designate what security levels have access to the
Sysop commands of this program (some people like to allow their Co-Sysops to have
access to these powerful and useful commands). You can manually add names or security
levels to this file with any text editor. It is NOT case sensitive, but make sure to
leave in the entry for SYSOP so that you still have access these features.

2.	The second, CHAT.DAT, is NOT generated but can be created with ANY text editor.
The first line should contain the name of a third party wccode chat program like wcTele.
The second line contains the parameter for the third party chat program (if needed).
This file is optional, and if not provided then the game uses the default chat.

3. The third file, WHOS.DAT, is NOT generated but can be created with ANY text editor.
The first line should contain the name of a third party wccode WHO program like SeekingU.
The second line contains the parameter for the third party WHO program (if needed).
This file is optional, and if not provided then the game uses the default WHO.

Files Used and How to Take Advantage of them:
---------------------------------------------
These are the files that are located in the InTheNavy folder and what they do. Some of these are
created when certain things happen in the game, so if some are not present, do not worry.

Age.dat - This is the file that contains the minimum age of the users that are allowed in the
program. If this file does not exist, then no age check is done. You can simply create a file
with this name and put a number in for the age, or use the SysOp option to turn this off or on.

Chat.dat - If this file exists, it would contain the name of the chat room to run if you are
not running Wildcat's default chat room. The file MUST contain 2 lines in it, the first would
be the name of the chat program to run, without the wcx extension. The second line should be
blank or it should contain the parameter required by the program to make it run.

GoAway.dat - This file can contain names or security levels in it. If the user's name or
security level is in this file, they will not be allowed into the game. This is an easy way to
take away abusers access to the program. This file does not need to exist, if it exists, it is
checked. Capitalization is not important. Just create this file with any text editor and enter
the names or security levels each on a different line.

A file named InTheNavy GO AWAY.BBS will be displayed if this file exits. The Go AWAY.BBS should be
located in the DISPLAY FOLDER of InTheNavy. THis file does not get shipped with the release, you
can create it optionally with WcDraw. If this file does not exist, then the user will be told that
they are not allowed into the program and to ask the SysOp for a reason or how to get access.

InTheNavy.HLP - This is the file you are reading at this time.

InTheNavy Doctor.bbs - This is an optional screen that you can create and copy over to the InTheNavy
DISPLAYS folder and will be displayed with the user enters the Doctors office. Note that this
screen is not included with the release program, but the option is there to display it if you
want to create one.

InTheNavy First.bbs - This is the screen that is displayed when you enter the game for the very
first time. You can redesign the screen as you see fit. See Custom Setup for more details on
this option.

InTheNavy Go Away.bbs - This file is not included with the program, if you use the GOAWAY option,
then this file could be displayed. The location should be the DISPLAYS folder of the InTheNavy
folder. Basically, you create a file called GoAway.dat inside the InTheNavy folder and put in it
any names or security levels that you want to keep certain players or security levels out of
the game. If this BBS file does not exist and you have names or security levels in the
GoAway.dat file, a simple message will be displayed.

InTheNavy Lottery.bbs - This is an optional screen that you can create and copy over to the
InTheNavy DISPLAYS folder and will be displayed with the user enters the Lottery Screen. Note
that this screen is not included with the release program, but the option is there to display
it if you want to create one

InTheNavy Main Menu.bbs - This is the screen that is displayed when you enter the game. This is
the main menu where all the action takes place from. You can redesign the screen as you see fit.
See Custom Setup for more details on this option.

InTheNavy Running Maint.bbs - This is an optional screen that you can create and copy over to the
InTheNavy DISPLAYS folder and will be displayed with the user enters the game and the maintenance
is running. See Maintenance for more details. This file is not shipped with the release and you
must create it if you want to display your own custom message.

InTheNavy Select.bbs - This if the prompt that appears thoughout the game. Make sure there are
no blank lines in this file so that the cursor will stay at the end of your prompt. You can
redesign the screen as you see fit. See Custom Setup for more details on this option.

InTheNavy User Help.BBS - This is the file that the users see when they press ? from the main
menu. It must be located in the DATA folder of InTheNavy. If it does not exist, it will be copied
over from the InTheNavy folder automatically when a user enters a game. You can copy this file
over to the Wildcat\Disp folder and modify it to your hearts content if you wish.

InTheNavy View.wcx - This is the program that views the top 20 for the many different catergories
that are listed. This program is ran from within the program. It MUST be copied to your Wildcat
folder.

InTheNavy Game Won - This is the screen that is displayed when the user wins the game. You can
modify this screen to display a personalized message.

InTheNavy.wcx - This is the main game, it must be located in the Wildcat folder.

LottoMoney.dat - This is how much money is in the jackpot at any given time. This is increased
when someone buys a ticket and it is decreased if someone wins the big price. You can modify
this file if you would like.

LottoPicks.dat - These are the last winning lottery numbers. Modifying this will do nothing, as
the winners are paid when the numbers are picked.

Prizes.dat - This file contains the prize that will be given out to the winner of the game.
This is optional and has no bearing on the rest of the game. If it exists, then the user will
be shown it when viewing the goal of the game.

Maint.dat - This file contains the last date that the maintenance was performed. When the first
player of the day enters the game, maintenance will be ran, cleaning up, and doing other things
that need to be done.

Overall.dat - This file is created when someone lists the top 20 overall players. This is what
is shown when a player enters the game.

Record High.dat - This is the record high score ever recorded at the time when the top overall
player is figured. This will not be deleted when the game is started over again, it is sort of
like the hall of fame, but just contains one high score and one name.

ReadMe.txt - This is a last minute read me file, it may or may not exist in your zip file.

RunningMaint.dat - This file is created when the maintenance is ran. If this file exits, people
will not be able to enter the game. If for some reason people are not able to get into the game,
just delete this file and it will be ok. This problem is yet to happen to my knowledge.

SysOp.dat - This file is created with the word SYSOP in it. This allows people with the
security level of SYSOP to be able to enter the SysOp part of the program. You can add any
security levels you want to this file, or even add individual names to this file. So, if you
wanted to allow SID MEIER to have SysOp access to this program, but not to the system, you can
just add his name to this file. Capitalization is not important in this file, but spelling is!

Today.log - This is the log file that can be viewed online by the users. Everything the users
do while in the game is wrote to this file. When the first user enters the game for a new day,
this file is copied over the YESTERDAY.LOG file and the Today.Log is restarted.

Version.dat - This contains the version number of the program. Do not change this, it will have
no bearing on the program, but will help me in knowing what version of the program you have.

Visits.dat - Contains a number that can be editted in the Registered version to restrict how
many times your users can play the game in a given day. Unregistered it is 3.

Wall.dat - This is the information that is contained on the Zany Wall part of the program. This
file can be modified and also deleted to clean the wall.

Whos.dat - If this file exists, it would contain the name of the Whos Online program to run if
you are not running Wildcat's default Whos online. The file MUST contain 2 lines in it, the
first would be the name of the Whos Online program to run, without the wcx extension. The
second line should be blank or it should contain the parameter required by the program to make
it run. If this file does not exist, then the built in lame looking whos online will be used.

I suggest you check out a program called SeekingU, written by the creator of this game. It allows
many more options then the typical Whos online program and looks very nice. You can page users
by node rather than name.

Most of the files can be looked at with text editors, but most of the files located in the DATA
folder cannot.

Maintenance Information:
------------------------
Maintenance is done when the first user enters the game for the day. This is quick and should
not have any effect on anyone in the game when it happens. They will be told that the
maintenance is running and taken out of the program. Anyone trying to enter the game while the
maintenance is ran will be unable to.

During maintenance, the Lottery Tickets are drawn and the monsters, gold and items are
distributed, if this option is on.

During Maintenance, a file called RUNNINGMAINT.DAT will be created and then deleted when
maintenace is done. This will keep other users from entering the program when the maintenance
is running. If will notify the person that maintenance is running and to try again in a few
minutes. Normally it just takes a few minutes to run maintenance. You can optionally create a
file called RUNNING MAINT.BBS and place it in the InTheNavy\DISPLAYS folder and this file will be
displayed instead of the simple message.
