       A NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER

Thank you for selecting The Wild Side! (TWS) for your system.
Before you go any further, please read the previous section for
important information regarding your license and warranty. You
should read this information VERY CAREFULLY before you proceed,
as it outlines your acceptance of liability for your use of the
       game!

The Wild Side! is the result of hundreds of hours of design,
development and testing. It is one of the most complex and
complete adventure games ever written for eSoft's TDBS system.
I'm sure you and your users will be extremely satisfied with the
       game and what it offers.

It is my intention to continue development of the game, and I
already have many ideas for its next update. If you have any
ideas for the game, please don't hesitate to let me know. Players
and sysops who enjoyed the game during its testing are
responsible for dozens of features in the release. I'm sure you
and your users will have some interesting thoughts too.

Finally, I wish to caution you. I have tried to make The Wild
Side! as configurable as possible -- from tame to titillating.
However, you cannot change the basic premise of the game: to have
sex, and lots of it. The game may very well be offensive to some
of your users or members of your community, and it is NOT
intended for access by minors! It is totally and completely up
to you to tailor the sexual elements of the game to your needs,
and it's also up to you to prohibit access by minors. This is not
a responsibility I can or will accept for you. Please install and
configure the game in a prudent fashion, or accept the risks in
       not doing so.

       INSTALLATION

       1) Create a new sub-directory on your system. It should be able
to accommodate at least 2 megabytes or more of files, although
initially TWS will consume far less than that.

       2) Copy the contents of the TWS release disk to the new
directory. A large number of files will be written to disk.
Don't be alarmed at the volume of them.

       3) It is best to create a NEW menu for sysop maintenance for the
game. If you prefer, you can add entries to an existing sysop
menu (we recommend the former, not the latter). ADDING THE DRIVE
AND PATH AS NECESSARY, add the following sysop-only entries to
       the menu:

                   System Configuration
                   Type=200        Opt Data=TWSS1 /Q

                   Item Configuration
                   Type=200        Opt Data=TWSS2 /Q

                   Player Configuration
                   Type=200        Opt Data=TWSS3 /Q

                   Map Configuration
                   Type=200        Opt Data=TWSS4 /Q

                   Item Inventory List Generator
                   Type=200        Opt Data=ISEARCH /Q

                   Database Scrub Utility
                   Type=200  Opt Data=SCRUB /Q

                   Reindex Utility
                   Type=200        Opt Data=TWSINDEX /Q

                   Manually Run TWS Ghost
                   Type=200        Opt Data=TWSGHOST /Q

       4) Using CEDIT, setup a ghost event to run at least once each
day. It should have Type=200 and Opt Data=TWSGHOST /Q. Remember
to add the correct drive and path to the Opt Data!

       5) Add a reference to TWS to a user-accessible menu. WARNING!
MAKE THIS MENU ENTRY ACCESSIBLE ONLY TO YOU (THE SYSOP) FOR
NOW!!! You will need to test the game yourself BEFORE opening it
to players! The entry should be:

                   The Wild Side!
                   Type=200        Opt Data=TWS /Q

Remember to add a drive and path to the Opt Data!

                  The Wild Side! - Version 1.20 - Page 5

       6) The game should be ready to run now. Logon to the system,
and run the game. DON'T RUN THE SYSTEM UTILITIES BEFORE ENTERING
THE GAME - SOME OF THE DATABASES HAVEN'T BEEN CREATED YET AND AN
       ERROR WILL RESULT!

       7) The game will be referencing a default map and a set of
default "sex text" files. The sex text are neither tame nor
hardcore... they are somewhere in between, and may be offensive
to you, your users, or your community. We recommend testing the
game with these files first. The documentation will explain
later how to make changes to the text. The items in the game's
default database are also somewhat middle of the road. You can
add items more raunchy, take them away, or add items of your own
creation if you wish. It's all explained later.

       8) If after testing the game yourself for awhile you decide that
the items and "sex text" files are acceptable to your or your
community's standards, open the game for users. You can always
make changes once the game is up and running.

UNDERSTANDING THE GAME AND ITS PIECES

Users enter the game and travel from room to room. They pick-up
items in the room. When a user sees another player in the room
with them (online or offline) the user can use an item against
that player. When the "target" player's resistance is reduced to
zero, the two players have sex in one of four different ways.
After selecting a way, a "sex text" file is displayed which
corresponds to the particular gender combination of the players
and the type of sex selected.

You can control the sexuality of the game in two ways: the
items, and the sex text files. The items are stored in a
database and are fully configurable. The sex text files are just
that -- text files. You can edit the ones supplied, or add an
unlimited number of your own. HINT: Hold contests for your
users to write additional sex text files.

The game itself is fully self-contained, except for the databases
and sex-text files. All other pieces are sysop-only elements for
configuration and control of the game.

       HOW TO PLAY

The game itself is fairly easy and straightforward to understand
and play. The user instruction file (TWS_INST.TXT) contains all
the information you or your users need to know to play and enjoy
the game. (The text of this file is also included later in this
documentation.) There are a lot of subtle elements, however,
which are not spelled out in the user instructions, and which are
far too numerous to outline here. The best way to learn about
the game and how everything in it relates is to play it. You'll
soon discover strategies for play, as well as for configuration
       of the game.

                  The Wild Side! - Version 1.20 - Page 6

       CONFIGURATION

Thankfully, you can open the game to players using the default
databases and files included with the release. However, as the
game gets played, you'll need to learn how to configure it and
control it in order for the game to form itself well to your
system and its usage volume. It may take two days, two weeks, or
two months for that to become necessary. We recommend that you
start exploring configuration and control immediately after you
play the game for the first time, in the event that user
excitement and participation in the game demands your attention
       in this regard.

There are several parts to the configuration of TWS. Each will
be discussed in its own section.

MAIN CONFIGURATION AND CONTROL - TWSS1

The first part of configuration and control is the system
settings database, and its companion editor program, TWSS1.

TWSS1 allows you to set various levels, threshholds, bonus
amounts and point costs, all of which combine to provide you with
virtually total control over the playability of the game. You can
make things remarkably difficult or extremely easy for your
       users.

The default settings for the game as supplied are adequate for a
system with light to average usage of the game. If you have
greater than average use of the game, you will probably need to
make at least some adjustments to the setting here. CAUTION:
DO NOT CARELESSLY MAKE *ANY* ADJUSTMENTS TO *ANY* SETTINGS UNTIL
YOU HAVE A FULL AND COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING OF THE SETTING YOU
ARE MODIFYING. In some cases, small adjustments have little or
no effect. In other cases, small adjustments can have a major
effect on the playability of the game. Get used to the game and
how it operates before making any changes at all.

The system configuration editor is composed of several screens.
Edit the settings as desired on each screen. When you're done
editing a screen, or if you wish to skip it, press Ctrl-W at any
time. After the last screen, you will be returned to TBBS.

Virtually all of the fields make sense just by reading their
description. Many of them deal with particular point amounts.
Some of the fields, however, work with the concept of a
"multiplier." All such fields work the same way, in that the
player's current point total is multiplied by this amount to
derive the bonus or penalty in question. You should make any
adjustments to multiplier fields VERY CAREFULLY to avoid making
the bonus or penalty too high.

                  The Wild Side! - Version 1.20 - Page 7

The TWSS1 editor program contains verbose prompts for each
setting which should be adequate. Therefore, we will not outline
each setting here. If you have any questions about the purpose
or usage of any setting, consult the structure information
contained in the file STRUCTS.TXT (included with the package), or
contact us (refer to "Support" later in this documentation).

       ITEM MAINTENANCE - TWSS2

The TWSS2 program allows you to have full control over items in
the game. There are a few important concepts to understand
       about items:

master defensive item database. This holds all of the items
supplied with the game for defensive use, one entry per item - NO
DUPLICATES. The second is the master offensive item database.
Like the first one, only this one holds all of the items supplied
with the game for offensive use, one entry per item - NO
DUPLICATES! The third is the main game item database, which
holds all of the items currently "in" the game for player use.

When you add items to the game for player use, the items added
are drawn from either or both of the two master item databases.
If you want new items in the game, you add them first to the
master databases where they are stored permanently. Then they
are added to the main game database for users from the master
databases. The process looks like this:

Items supplied with the game or added by sysop start by
being entered into the appropriate master database.

           +------------------+ +------------------+
           | Master Defensive | | Master Offensive |
           +------------------+ +------------------+
                     | |
                     +------------+------------+ Items added
                                  | by sysop to
                                  V game for player
                          +-----------------+ access and use
                          | Main Game Items | go FROM the master
                          +-----------------+ TO the main.

       2. The sexuality of the game is controlled partially with
items. One of your first tasks is to review the two master
databases and decide if anything is inappropriate for your
system or user audience. The "Include in Random" field
indicates whether or not the item in question will be added when
you randomly add new items. If something is not appropriate for
your system, change this field to a 0 (zero) and it will not be
added to the main game item database. Alternatively, if you
wish to permanently purge an item, delete it, then perform a
pack operation (the "P" command on the main TWSS2 menu).

                  The Wild Side! - Version 1.20 - Page 8

       3. You can add "freshness" to the game by keeping some items
out of the game, then later allowing more and more new items
into the main game database. Don't mark all the items as
"Include in Random" or they'll all be included when you add more
items to the game, and thus will accelerate users getting bored
       with the game.

       4. The playability of the game is controlled directly by the
number of items available. If there are not enough offensive
items in the game, users can't arouse anyone. The editor will
tell you the percentage of offensive (and defensive) items
available, and whether or not the value is too low. If the
editor tells you it's too low, add more of the low item (usually
it's the offensive items that run out most easily). CHECK THE
EDITOR FOR THE PERCENTAGE FIGURE OFTEN! IF YOU LET THE GAME GET
LOW ON ITEMS FOR EVEN A SHORT PERIOD, YOUR USERS MAY GIVE-UP ON
       THE GAME!

       5. A "match code" is what matches an offensive and defensive
item. (For a more complete explanation of match codes and their
use, refer to "Match Codes" later in the documentation.) If a
player uses an offensive item on another player, and that other
player has a defensive item with the same match code, then the
arousal attempt fails (the defensive items "repels" the offensive
item). For this reason, DO NOT ARBITRARILY CHANGE THE MATCH
CODES! If you decide to add new items to one of the master
databases, review which match codes are already used, and what
the items match with. Generally there are several OFFENSIVE
items which match a single DEFENSIVE item. Make the matches as
logical as possible. Feel free to add new match codes if you
wish...they are a single, capitalized letter. Match codes are
used internally only, and are not shown to players.

When you first enter TWSS2, it will scan the main item database
and report statistics to you regarding the number of items and
the percentage which are available. If either shows that a
particular item type (offensive or defensive) is low, make sure
you add more of that type of item.

After this, you will be presented with the main item editor menu.
From here, you can maintain the main game item database, the
master defensive item database, and/or the master offensive item
database. You can also pack all the item databases.

Let's discuss each command in detail:

       B. The "B" command lets you browse/edit/delete the main game
item database. These are the items that are available to or
possessed by players. You can edit any of the various fields
you wish, but the changes will be made to the game only, and not
       to the master database(s).

                  The Wild Side! - Version 1.20 - Page 9

       R. The "R" command lets you randomly add items to the game. THIS
IS THE COMMAND YOU'LL USE MOST FREQUENTLY. When you select this
command, it will ask you which type of item to add (offensive or
defensive) and how many to add. It will then randomly scan the
corresponding master database, and add items to the main game
database where they can be accessed by users. The editor will
pick which ones are actually added. NOTE: Any item which has
the "Include in Random" field equal to 0 (zero) in the master
database WILL NOT BE ADDED TO THE GAME. In this fashion, you can
control which items are available for adding to the game. If you
don't like a particular item, or wish to control distribution of
items to the game, do a browse/edit/delete on the master
databases (using the "D" or "O" command) and use the "Include in
       Random" field to your advantage.

       S. The "S" command allows you to selectively add an item to the
game. You pick whether you want to add an offensive or defensive
items. All the items of that type are listed, and you pick the
desired item by number. You are then prompted to enter the
quantity of the selected item you wish to add to the main game
item database. Once selected, the items are added.

       D. The "D" command lets you browse/edit/delete items in the
master defensive database. Make any changes here to existing
defensive items which can be added to the game.

       E. The "E" command lets you add new items to the master
defensive item database. If you wish to create totally new
defensive items, you start by adding them here. Then, using the
"R" or "S" commands, you can make them available in the game
       itself.

       O. The "O" command lets you browse/edit/delete items in the
master offensive database. Make any changes here to existing
offensive items which can be added to the game.

       N. The "N" command lets you add new items to the master
offensive item database. If you wish to create totally new
offensive items, you start by adding them here. Then, using the
"R" or "S" commands, you can make them available in the game
       itself.

       P. The "P" command lets you pack all three item databases,
removing any records marked for deletion. YOU CAN DO THIS ONLY

                 The Wild Side! - Version 1.20 - Page 10

WHEN NOBODY IS USING THE GAME!

       Q. The "Q" command lets you exit the TWSS2 item editor program.

The following is a discussion of the fields available when
       browing:

PLAYER IN POSSESSION. (Main Game Only) The alias of the player
who has this item in their possession. This field is empty if
       no player has it.

NAME OF ITEM. This is the name of the item itself as shown to
       and referenced by a user.

ROOM ITEM IS IN. (Main Game Only) The room number this item is
located in. This field contains a 0 (zero) if it is in a
       player's possession.

TYPE OF ITEM. (Main Game Only) The type of item this is. 0
(zero) is an offensive item, 1 is a defensive item.

INCLUDE IN RANDOM. (Masters Only) Indicates whether to include
this item when randomly adding more items to the game (the "R"
command on the main menu of this editor). 1 says include this
item, 0 (zero) says don't include it.

MATCH CODE. A single capitalized letter which links this item
to its corresponding item of opposite type.

STRENGTH OF ITEM. The resistance zapping strength of this item
(offensive items) or the resistance adding strength (defensive
       items).

The following commands are available in this editor when
       browsing:

       PGDN. Display next record.

       PGUP. Display previous record.

       ESC. Exit the editor.

       F2. Delete this record.

F3. Go to a particular record by record number.

F4. Go to the top (first) record.

F5. Go to the bottom (last) record.

       PLAYER MAINTENANCE - TWSS3

The TWSS3 editor allows you to maintain any aspect of the player
database. Most of your work here will be spent editing existing
users, but you can also add users to the game. The editor also
lets you pack the player database to remove any players marked
       for deletion.

When you run the program, its main menu is presented. The
following commands are available from this menu:

       A. The "A" command allows you to manually add a new user to the
game. You'll rarely have a use for this command, except to add
"shill players" to the game. (Refer to the section "Shill
Players" later in the documentation for details.)

       B. The "B" command allows you to browse/edit/delete players in
the game. Most of your work with this editor will be done here,
       and more details follow.

       P. The "P" command allows you to pack the player database. This
must be performed with no users in the game!

       Q. The "Q" command allows you to exit this editor and return to
       TBBS.

Since most of your time will be spent using the
browse/edit/delete function, let's discuss each of the fields you
can view and edit there individually:

REAL NAME. This is the name of the player as they are logged
onto your BBS. DO NOT CHANGE THIS FIELD UNINTENTIONALLY!

ALIAS. This is the player's alias in the game, and is the name
linked to the item and map databases. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU
DO NOT CHANGE THIS FIELD, AS IT *WILL NOT* CHANGE REFERENCE LINKS
IN THE OTHER DATABASES, RESULTING IN STRANDED ITEMS OR ROOMS!!!

COMPATIBILITY. Only the first two characters of the field are
currently used; the remainder are ignored. The first character
is the player's top/bottom preference. The second character is
the player's oral active/passive preference. The codes here MUST
be capitalized letters. They are E (either), D (don't like it),
       A (active) or P (passive).

LAST PLAYED. This is the date the player was last in the game.

SPECIALS. This field currently handles two of the special items:
shower, and fridge. If there is a "4" in any position in this
field it means that the player has used a shower. If there is a
"5" in any position in this field it means that the player has
eaten from a fridge. When a player has these specials, they
cause bonus points to be awarded during certain types of sex.

                 The Wild Side! - Version 1.20 - Page 12

MOVES TODAY. This is the number of moves the player made during
       the day they last played.

RESISTANCE. This is the player's current resistance level, the
level of resistance against another player's arousal efforts. A
0 (zero) here means the player is ready for sex; a -1 here means
the player is currently "recovering" from a previous encounter.

POINTS. The current number of points this player has.

TOTAL ENCOUNTERS. This is the total number of encounters the
player has had since the last total game reset, and indicates
       their "sex" level.

WILLING. The string shown to other players when this player is
willing to have sex with them.

UNWILLING. The string shown to other players when this player
is not willing to have sex with them.

GENDER. This is the sex of the player, M is male, F is female.
It must be a single captalized letter.

PREFERENCE. The sexual preference of the player. S is
straight, G is gay or lesbian, B is bisexual. NOTE: Lesbians
enter a letter L when they configure themselves in the game, but
it is stored as a G in this field! This field must have a
       single captalized letter.

ROOM LOCATED. The room this player is currently located in.

ONLINE NOW. This field contains a 1 when the user is online
(playing the game) or a 0 when they are not.

PROTECTION. Indicates whether the user has purchased protection
or not. 1 is yes, 0 is no.

AROUSED. Indicates whether the player is currently arousing
someone else, or is being aroused by someone. 1 is yes, 0 is no.

LUBE. Indicates whether the player has lube in their possession.
1 is yes, 0 is no.

AROUSER. The alias of the player this player is in arousal with
(if the AROUSED field is 1). This field does not clear after an
       arousal.

CHAT. Indicates whether the player is in chat in the game or
not. 1 is in chat, 0 is not in chat.

IUSERBOX OFFSET. FOR INTERNAL AND DIAGNOSTIC USE ONLY! DO NOT
       CHANGE THIS FIELD!

The following commands are available in this editor when doing a
       browse/edit/delete:

                 The Wild Side! - Version 1.20 - Page 13

       PGDN. Display next record.

       PGUP. Display previous record.

       ESC. Exit the editor.

F2. Delete the currently displayed player.

F3. Search for a player by the REAL NAME field.

F4. Search for a player by the ALIAS field.

       MAP (ROOM) MAINTENANCE - TWSS4

One of the key elements of the game is the map, which contains
all of the rooms which users can navigate through. This editor
allows you to manipulate the database which holds this
       information.

When you run the editor, the following commands are available
       from its main menu:

       A. The "A" command allows you to add a room to the map. You'll
rarely use this command, since players will buy and add new rooms
on their own as the game gets played.

       B. The "B" command allows you to browse/edit/delete rooms from
the map. Most of your time with this editor will be spent here,
and we'll discuss it in more detail later.

       P. The "P" command allows you to pack the map database, removing
any deleted rooms from the database.

       Q. The "Q" commands allow you to exit the editor and return to
       TBBS.

   >>> WARNING! IMPORTANT INFORMATION! DO NOT DELETE RECORDS IN THE
MAP DATABASE WITHOUT EXTREME CAUTION! Rooms are referenced by a
room number, which is really its record number in the database.
When you delete a room (record), all references to that room will
be incorrect, effectively DESTROYING the map! DO NOT DELETE
ROOMS IN THE MAP DATABASE USING THIS EDITOR UNLESS YOU MANUALLY
       CORRECT ALL ROOM NUMBER REFERENCES!!!

When doing a browse/edit/delete function, several fields are
available on the screen. They are:

NORTH. This is the room number located to the north of this
room, or 0 (zero) if no room is north of this one.

SOUTH. This is the room number located to the south of this
room, or 0 (zero) if no room is south of this one.

EAST. This is the room number located to the east of this room,
or 0 (zero) if no room is east of this one.

                 The Wild Side! - Version 1.20 - Page 14

WEST. This is the room number located to the west of this room,
or 0 (zero) if no room is west of this one.

UPSTAIRS. This is the room number located upstairs from this
room, or 0 (zero) if no room is upstairs.

DOWNSTAIRS. This is the room number located downstairs from this
room, or 0 (zero) if no room is downstairs.

SPECIAL. This field indicates which (if any) special item is
       available in this room.  0 (zero) indicates no specials are here;
       a 1 means a phone is in this room; a 2 indicates a secret
passage; a 3 indicates that lube is here; 4 indicates that a
shower is here; a 5 indicates a fridge is here. NOTE: Specials
never go away. It is best for game play to have relatively few
       specials in the game.

NAME OF ROOM. The name of this room as shown to players.

CREATOR. The alias of the player that created this room (or
blank if it's a supplied or sysop-created room).

TIMES SEX HAD. This is the number of times people have had sex
in this room since the last time this field was reset by the
ghost program. If a player created this room, bonus points are
awarded to that player based on this number.

The following commands are available to you in this editor:

PGDN. Move to next room in the database.

PGUP. Move to previous room in the database.

ESC. Exit this screen and return to the main editor menu.

F2. Mark this room as deleted. DO NOT DELETE ROOMS IN AN
ESTABLISHED MAP DATABASE! SEE THE NOTE PREVIOUSLY IN THIS
       SECTION REGARDING DELETING OF ROOMS!!!

F3. Go to a room by number.

F4. Go to the first room in the database.

F5. Go to the last room in the database.

       DATABASE SCRUBBING UTILITY - SCRUB

Improper manual edits to some TWS databases, or some types of
system or TDBS failures, can result in records in various system
databases which make invalid references to other database
       records.

From time to time, we recommend running the SCRUB program to
resolve these types of errors should they develop. The program,
when run, will report the errors it has corrected.

                 The Wild Side! - Version 1.20 - Page 15

       TWS GHOST PROGRAM - TWSGHOST

This program is designed to be run daily (or more often if
desired). Along with cleaning up certain types of error
conditions, it resets shill players and room ownership sex counts
where applicable. If nobody is in the game when the ghost runs,
it will also reindex all of the databases to ensure that they are
       intact at all times.

If nobody is in the game when the ghost runs, users who attempt
to enter the game will be forced to wait temporarily while the
       ghost program completes its job.

The TWSGHOST ghost program is designed to be run via a ghost
event in TBBS. Refer to your TBBS manual for instructions on how
       to install a ghost task.

We recommend that you make the ghost program available from a
sysop menu as well so that you can run it manually if desired.

ITEM SEARCH LIST UTILITY - ISEARCH

The ISEARCH program was written primarily for diagnostic purposes
during the development of TWS. It is included with the release,
but has little or no practical value. It is for sysop use only.

When you run ISEARCH, it creates an item inventory listing to a
file named ILIST.TXT. Only items which are NOT held by players
(open items) are listed. You can use the list to get an idea of
how many items are available, and how they are distributed among
       the rooms.

Please note that the list is current as of the moment it is run,
and gets out of date very quickly!

TWS DATABASE REINDEX UTILITY - TWSINDEX

This program reindexes all the TWS databases. This must be done
only when no players are in the game.

You shouldn't have to run this program except in extreme
circumstances. The ghost program reindexes the databases (when
it's possible to do so), but in normal environments, the
databases shouldn't need to be reindexed anyhow. The program is
provided to make this task easy if reindexing is necessary.

       SHILL PLAYERS

TWS supports "shill players" - fake, robotic players designed to
encourage participation in the game. They also help even out a
lack of balance in the various types of players.

When the game is first put online, or after it is reset, it takes
awhile for players to come into the game. Those early players
need people to "do" in order to advance in the game, and that's
       the purpose of shill players.

                 The Wild Side! - Version 1.20 - Page 16

Also, let's say you have a user base that is composed largely of
heterosexual males, but only a very few women. You may wish to
add a significant number of heterosexual female shill players to
keep your users happy. Shill players can be used to "even the
scales" of gender and/or sexual preference.

As shipped, the game has two shills for each combination of
gender and sexual preference. You can add as many more as you
wish, or freely delete or change the characteristics of existing
       shills.

Shill players are stored and configured exactly like a regular
player (using the TWSS3 player database editor). The ONLY
difference is that the "real name" field in the player database
is "@SHILL". The string must begin with an at sign (@) and the
       word "shill" must be capitalized.

To add a shill, use the player editor (TWSS3) and select the "A"
command from the main menu. Make sure their real name is set to
"@SHILL" then complete the remaining fields as you desire.
Descriptions of the fields are discussed previously in the
documentation in the "Player Maintenance" section. Again - you
may have as many shill players in the game as you desire.

Although it doesn't occur automatically, shill players can hold
defensive items if you wish. To give a shill player an item,
you must use the item editor (TWSS2) and assign one or more
defensive items to any one or more shill player. Refer to the
instructions earlier in this documentation for instructions on
       using the item editor.

       SEX TEXT FILES

One of the two primary ways to control the sexuality of the game
are the "sex text" files (the other way being the item names).
As the name suggests, they are simply text files.

Simply by looking at them you can determine the overall format
of the files, but we'll discuss that and the naming convention
       here for convenience.

Sex text files come in two forms: those for encounters, and
       those for "phone sex."

The encounter files have the following naming convention:

       _SEX____.TXT
       ^ ^^^^
       |   ||||
       | ||++-------> ONE or TWO digits; can be ANY valid
       |   ||            filename character(s).
       | |+-----> Gender of player being done (M or F).
       |   +->  Gender of this player (M or F).
+-> Sex type. A is intercourse, B is oral us to them,
C is oral them to us, and D is oral "69."

                 The Wild Side! - Version 1.20 - Page 17

Several sex text files are supplied with the game, but they are
not enough to keep the game interesting. You will want to add
more of your own, or encourage your users to write them. Some
system during the beta testing of TWS held contests to encourage
user development of sex text files.

Encounter sex text files have a simple format. They are plain
ASCII text files, no more than 78 characters per line. Wherever
a tilde character (~) appears in the text file, the target user's
("them") alias is inserted in real time. WORD WRAPPING IS NOT IN
EFFECT, so any line in the text file which contains a tilde (~)
name substitution should be shortened by 15 characters. In TWS
Version 1.20, there is a limit of one tilde character per line.
Observe the supplied sex text files to get an idea of how to
write one. HINT: Sex text files should be about 3/4ths of a full
       screen in size.

Phone sex text files have the following naming convention:

               PHONE___.TXT
                    ^^^
                    |||
                    ||+--------> ONE digit; can be ANY valid
                    ||            filename character.
                    ||
                    |+---------> Gender of this player (M or F).
                    |
+----------> Sexual preference of this player.
S for straight, G for gay, B for bi.

The format of the phone sex text files is the same as for the
encounter files, except that the tilde (~) character substitutes
       the user's own alias.

       MATCH CODES

As discussed previously, match codes are used to pair offensive
and defensive items. When a player uses an offensive item in an
attempt to arouse another player, and that other player is
holding a defensive item which has the same match code as that of
the offensive item used against him, then the offensive item is
"repelled." When repelled, both the offensive item used and the
defensive item which matched it are taken from their respective
players and returned to the "pool" of available items in the
game. They are returned to randomly selected rooms.

Match codes are a single, CAPITALIZED letter. The game is
supplied with an extensive array of both offensive and defensive
items which are pre-matched in what we feel is a logical fashion.
If you wish to add new items to the game, you can use existing
match codes, or add new match codes.

                 The Wild Side! - Version 1.20 - Page 18

There are two important points about match codes.

       1) Generally speaking, there are several offensive items for
each defensive item. Experience with game configuration and play
have proven this to be most effective. You are encouraged to
maintain this methodology, but you do not have to.

       2) There does not have to be a matching defensive item for any
particular offensive item, and vice-versa. It is probably bad
form to trick your users by having defensive items which don't
defend against anything. However, offensive items which have no
matching defensive item are always effective, and you can add
       such items for special effects.

AS SHIPPED, the following list of items and match codes are in
       effect.

       Offensive Items

       Item Name Match Code
       ----------------------- ----------
       ICE CUBES A
       ROSE PETALS A

       AUTOMATIC TOP-OF-MONTH RESET

TWS *OPTIONALLY* provides automatic reset capabilities on the
first play of the game of the first day of each month. The reset
is totally automatic, if the game is properly configured to allow
       it.

On auto-reset, all players are deleted from the player database
(except shill players, which remain). The first "x" items in the
item database are retained (the value of "x" being set by you in
the system configuration). The retained items are cleared, made
available to players, and randomly placed in rooms. All other
databases (such as the log and mailbox files) are cleared.

                 The Wild Side! - Version 1.20 - Page 20

To configure TWS to reset the game, copy a "fresh" map (one
without any user room additions) in the TWS directory to any name
you wish. (Our recommendation, and the default, is
SKELETON.DBF.) Next, run the TWS configuration editor (TWSS1)
and enter the name of the copied MAP database in the field titled
"Name of Map File (if any) to Invoke T/o/M Auto-Reset" on the
first screen in the editor (at the bottom).

NOTE: Three "fresh" new maps are included with the game. They
are named MAP1.DBF, MAP2.DBF, and MAP3.DBF, and are contained in
an archive file (MAPS.ZIP) inside the TWS release. MAP1.DBF is
the same map as that in the main archive, MAP.DBF; the others are
different maps. Use one of these fresh maps for your copy, or
make your own (see "Making Maps" below).

Provided that the file exists, and is properly referenced in the
system configuration, the auto-reset will occur automatically on
the first play of the game on the first of the month.

The copied map database needs to be a clear (no user-created
rooms) map database. You can use one of the map databases
supplied with the game, or make your own (see the "Making Maps"
section below). (No tool is supplied to make a map database from
       scratch in TWS Version 1.20.)

       MAKING MAPS

One way to keep the TWS game "alive" for users is to change the
map. YOU MUST CHANGE MAPS *ONLY* WHEN THE GAME IS RESET, EITHER
AUTOMATICALLY, OR AT THE TOP OF THE MONTH (see the previous
       section on automatic top-of-month reset).

Three maps are supplied with the game in the MAPS.ZIP archive
file. To change a map when an auto-reset next occurs, follow the
instructions in the previous section "Automatic Top-of-Month
       Reset."

If you wish to make you own map, you need to have a copy of dBASE
or a dBASE compatible database product. WORKING WITH A *COPY* of
the MAP.DBF file supplied with the game, ZAP the database (clear
out all of its records). Create a map of your own design. If
you don't have dBASE, you can use the map editor (TWSS4) to
delete all of the rooms EXCEPT FOR ROOM NUMBER 1 in the map, pack
the database, and add rooms to make your own map.

It is best to have a map design before you start this process.
Using a piece of paper, draw a map out. Number each room in your
map beginning with the number 1, and continuing through the total
number of rooms you want. Draw lines between the rooms to show
how they connect. Your rooms should be plotted out on a defined
grid using right angles, since diagonal moves are not possible.

                 The Wild Side! - Version 1.20 - Page 21

If you wish, the map can have multiple levels and you can place
"stairways" between the levels by using upstairs and downstairs
movements provided for with the game. NOTE: Rooms between
levels don't have to have the upstairs and downstairs movements
between the same two rooms...they can occur anywhere!

When you are setting up the database after you have completed
your design, simply append new records to the database. The
current record number is the room number you're working with.
Using your drawing as a guide, set the values in the NORTH,
SOUTH, EAST, WEST, UPSTAIRS and DOWNSTAIRS fields to the room
number attached in the corresponding direction. If no room is
connected to any direction, place a 0 (zero) in that field.

You will need to name each room, and decide what specials (if
any) are available there. Refer to the previous sections of this
documentation for an explanation of the fields, or the structure
information located in the file STRUCTS.TXT supplied with the
       game.

       USER DOCUMENTATION

The following is a copy of TWS_INST.TXT, the user instruction
       file for TWS.

Welcome to The Wild Side!. This game is a trip -- on the wild
side -- where the object of the game is having sex as often and
with as many people as possible! In our little fantasy world,
you can enjoy any sexual behavior you wish without ruining your
marriage, contracting diseases, or hanging out in a smoke-filled
bar. The worst thing that can happen to you here is that you'll
       lose the game!

Like most adventure games, this one is organized as a series of
rooms. You begin in room 1, and roam around looking for items to
pick-up, people to have sex with, and things to do.

When you encounter someone to have sex with, they may give you
the cold shoulder! That's where the items come into play. There
are two types: OFFensive, and DEFensive. NOTE: So you can tell
them apart, OFFENSIVE items are shown in green (on color
monitors) and also have "(O)" after the name of the item.
DEFENSIVE items are shown in red (on color monitors) and have
       "(D)" after their name.

Offensive items are those items you use on someone else when you
want to have sex with them. Each time you use an offensive item,
their resistance will be worn down a bit. Sometimes you're
lucky, and it'll take only one item to wear down a user's
resistance. Other times, they may have a defensive item in their
       possession!

                 The Wild Side! - Version 1.20 - Page 22

Defensive items "repel" MATCHING offensive items, and prevent
another player's matching offensive item from having any effect
on you when they use it. A user doesn't have to be online for a
defensive item in their possession to have an effect! If someone
is holding a DEFensive item, but it doesn't match the OFFensive
item used against them, it won't have any effect!

The various items have varying levels of strength. The higher
the strength of an offensive item, the more effect it has when
used on another player. But be aware that the matching defensive
item has an equally powerful effect!

Each time you use an offensive item, it's used up, and is taken
from you. Defensive items are yours until you let go of them.

New players are started out with some points to help get going.
Taking defensive items, buying sex lube, and other activities
take points away from you. Having sex (among other things) will
add points to your score. Things like using the pay phone may
award you with prizes - then again, it may cost you points.

When you bump into a player in a room with you, you may wish to
try and have sex with them. That starts by arousing them. If
you're really lucky, they'll submit right away. Usually you'll
have to use one or more of your offensive items on that person
to break down their resistance to you - so make sure you're
carrying some defensive items (like a dildo, vibrator, etc.)
before you attempt to arouse someone else!

You may find someone recovering from a prior encounter. Sometimes
you can try to arouse them again and get them to submit anyway,
but doing so costs you points. The number of times it takes to
get their attention varies; sometimes it takes just once, other
times it can take several attempts. Remember - each attempt
takes its toll on your score!

Once the object of your affection submits to you, you can have
sex in one of four different ways. Pick the one most appealing
to you, and go for it! You'll get points for your efforts.

You can leave a message to the person you just had sex with when
you're finished. Doing so gets you bonus points.

The more sex you have, the experience you'll get. You start out
as a rookie, then become experienced, then a stud (or studette!),
then a pro. The higher the level you're at, the more points you
get when you have sex - and the more points you lose when you're
       penalized for something.

All of this mindless sexual fun comes at a cost, however - VD.
You can buy protection (it's expensive) to prevent VD. Without
protection, the risk of VD increases with each experience level.
If you get VD, you'll have to pay a high cost for an injection to
fix you back up again. If you don't have enough points for that,
       you're reset to ZERO!!!

                 The Wild Side! - Version 1.20 - Page 23

The player with the highest score is declared the winner. The
sysop can do this anytime he or she desires (usually monthly).
Then it's off to try to "becum" the winner all over again!

To extra excitement to the game, you are allowed to buy your own
room. You get to "attach" your room anywhere you look (provided
there's space for it to fit). Rooms are expensive, but you get
bonus points when people have sex in your room!

       SUPPORT

We will attempt to provide each TWS licensee with a reasonable
level of technical support. Please note that VOICE SUPPORT IS
NOT AVAILABLE -- all support is handled ELECTRONICALLY via BBS!
There are no exceptions! Any attempt to reach the author or
obtain support through any avenue other than that outlined below
       will not be acknowledged.

If you encounter a problem you cannot resolve on your own, then
reach us VOICE at 919-403-9473, or on our bbs at 919-383-4905 or
telnet to bbs.bbsci.com. Have ready COMPLETE details about the
nature of the problem. Please note that you must have the current
       version to recive support.

You can leave a message to sysop at logoff on your first call,
and describe your problem there. Make sure you mention in your
message where and when you purchased your copy of TWS, or we will
ask that before we post a response to your problem report.

       DATA STRUCTURES

The structures of all of the various databases used by TWS are
included in a separate file named STRUCTS.TXT.

NOTE: WE WILL *NOT* ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FILE STRUCTURES.
COMPLETE INFORMATION IS IN THE STRUCTS.TXT FILE; NO ADDITIONAL
INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE OR WILL BE PROVIDED.

       MANUALLY RESETTING THE GAME

Should it become necessary to reset the game, the recommended
procedure is to copy a "clean" MAP.DBF file to SKELETON.DBF in
the TWS directory on your hard disk. Set your computer's system
date to the first of the NEXT month, logon, then run TWS. This
will force an automatic reset of the game as described
previously. When complete, set the date back to the correct
date, and the system will run normally.

If you must reset everything by hand, and refuse to change the
system date to accomplish this, contact us for additional
       details (see "Support" above).
