SAN JOSE, CA (Microbytes Daily News Service) --- Several
companies demonstrated personal computer applications running
over Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) protocols at Interop '89.
The OSI protocols, which are still under development, provide
functions similar to those of TCP/IP, but are expected to be
supported by most computer makers. The applications run over the
OSI protocols through a NetBIOS interface. This means that users
will be able to communicate with a wide variety of systems using
OSI, but will be able to continue using their familiar PC
applications.

Vendors who took part in the OSI demonstration included
Ungermann-Bass, 3Com, Microsoft, AT&T, and the French company
RCE. 3Com said it would offer a NetBIOS over OSI product in
early 1990.
