Hewlett-Packard has taken the wraps off a new color inkjet
printer designed for use in networks and other high-volume
situations.

At $2495, the new PaintJet XL is almost twice the price of the
original PaintJet, which H-P will continue to sell. However, the
new XL, with a resolution of 180 dots per inch, is two to three
times as fast, can take larger paper, and can produce sharper
graphics. The speed and sharpness are largely due to a new ink
cartridge system; while the original PaintJet put 3 colors in a
single cartridge, the XL has a separate cartridge for each color.
As a result, the printer can put down the complete line of color
in 1 pass instead of 3.

The separate colors also make possible a new "presentation mode,"
in which the lines of color are interlaced to produce
better-looking solid colors. That improves the quality both for
printouts on paper and for transparencies. The XL can use the
same software drivers as the original PaintJet; an optional
Macintosh support kit ($125) supports 32-bit Color QuickDraw with
16 million colors. The PaintJet XL requires special coated paper.

HP says the new printer will be available in November.
