Nintendo has announced it will offer a financial-services
computer network that works with the Nintendo Entertainment
System next year. The service will connect the video game
machines to the currently existing on-line financial network
operated by Fidelity Investments of Boston.

Plans require Nintendo to develop a serial port and modem for the
game machine, and for Fidelity to create telecommunications
software for a plug-in cartridge. The financial services
operation will be part of a proposed "Nintendo Entertainment
System Network" that's slated to be launched in 1990, the company
said. The "NES Network" will also offer interactive games and
entertainment and information services.

Nintendo estimates that by the time the service begins operation,
20 million American households will have a Nintendo video game.
