Aldus Corporation is now shipping an OS/2 version of its
PageMaker desktop publishing package. Formally dubbed "Aldus
PageMaker 3.0 for OS/2 Presentation Manager," Aldus claims it's
the first desktop publishing program that uses OS/2's advanced
operating system technology.

PageMaker for OS/2 can perform multiple tasks concurrently, such
as importing text, printing documents, flowing text, redrawing
the screen, and opening other applications. With several
PageMaker documents open at the same time, you can easily cut
and paste elements among the documents. There's also a "smart"
clipboard that maintains formatting information during cutting
and pasting of PageMaker publications, PageMaker-drawn graphics,
and rich text format (RTF) files.

The program includes 30 predesigned templates for creating
documents such as newsletters, memos, and reports. It also comes
with 20 samples of business-oriented clip art from 3-G graphics.

Aldus claims that with the release of PageMaker for OS/2, their
package is the only desktop publishing software that's
compatible across three computing platforms: OS/2, DOS, and
Macintosh. Documents you create with the Mac or DOS versions of
PageMaker can be opened under PageMaker for OS/2, or vice-versa.

To use PageMaker 3.0 for OS/2 Presentation Manager, you'll need
OS/2 1.1, a 40-megabyte hard drive, a mouse, 4-6 megabytes of
RAM, and an EGA, VGA, or other high-resolution graphics display
system. Aldus recommends that the package be used with an
80386-based system, although it does work with 80286-based
systems. It outputs to all PostScript-compatible printers.

The company says a version for OS/2 version 1.2 is now under
development. Called version 3.01, it will include import filters
to support CGM and GDDM/PIF mainframe graphics files, as well as
a driver for HP PCL (Printer Command Language) printers.

Price: $795; upgrade from DOS version, $95 (through February
1990).
