LAS VEGAS (Microbytes Daily News Service) --- An industry group
of microcomputer managers is calling on computer makers to stop
shipping 80486-based systems until they have bug-free chips from
Intel. Intel recently confirmed bugs in its 486 CPU and said it
would send out clean chips before the end of this month. The 486
Standardization Committee, sponsored by the Microcomputer
Managers Association, met during Comdex this week and urged
manufacturers not to ship machines with faulty chips, even with
the promise that the chips would be replaced eventually with good
ones.

When Intel first confirmed the bugs last month (they involve
two floating-point functions), IBM stopped shipping its 486
Power Platform upgrade, and some other companies followed
suit. But others, including ALR, continue to offer their
486-based PCs, and some say they'll pop in new chips when
they get them from Intel.
