If you have a Hewlett-Packard or a LaserMaster 1000 Plain-Paper
Typesetter, you can interface directly to OS/2's GPI (Graphical
Programming Interface) using LaserMaster's GPI controller. It's
a PC coprocessor card that implements the native function calls
of the native functions of the GPI.

The GPI controller bypasses the controller in an HP LaserJet,
taking GPI information from your system at full bus speed
(usually 8 MHz.). Because the GPI controller's driver and
hardware processor use the same mathematical formulas that the
GPI interface uses, there's no interpretation (like in
PostScript). GPI says your page is sent directly to the laser
printer's engine seconds after you issue the print command.

For the HP LaserJet, the controller is available in two
versions: the LX6/2 outputs 300 by 300 dpi (dots per inch), and
the LX6/4 outputs 600 by 300 dpi.

GPI's Model 1000 Plain Paper Typesetter is a complete printing
system, including a customized high-resolution version of the
GPI controller and a laser printer. The system outputs at 1000
by 400 dpi.

If you're a developer, contact Bruce Butler, GPI's vice
president of product development, for information on the
company's ``Development Partner'' program; under which you can
obtain GPI controllers for development testing purposes.

Price: LX6/2, $2195; LX6/4, $3395; Model 1000, $7495.
